Join Foodland and Shop for Higher Education

Many years ago, a young man from Ireland had a dream of leaving his homeland and coming to America. With just $7 in his pocket he headed to New York, then Hawaii, and in 1948 opened the first Foodland store. High school seniors also have great dreams. Some aspire to be teachers, physical therapists, graphic designers, engineers, doctors, business owners, and much more. While going to college is a financial investment, it is also, no doubt, a financial burden to both students and parents. That’s where our shoppers can play a key role by supporting their favorite high school in Foodland’s Shop for Higher Education program. By simply shopping with your Maika‘i card and telling your cashier which participating high school you want to designate, you’ll help the school earn points. The same number of Maika‘i points you earn, the school will also earn. You can also help your favorite high school earn more points by purchasing specially marked items – just look for the bright 2x, 3x and 5x bonus point shelf signs.

Another fun and easy way to help a school earn a scholarship is by voting for your favorite video in the first-ever Shop for Higher Education School Video Contest! From February 6-20, enjoy watching the video submissions, and then cast your vote on Facebook. You can vote once a day, every day! The school earning the most votes will win a $2,000 scholarship!

Since the program began in 2006, Foodland has awarded $2,000 scholarships to a total of 755 students– that’s more than $1.5 million in scholarships! Shop for Higher Education is an easy way for shoppers to contribute to their community and help 100 Hawaii high school seniors receive a valuable scholarship. The designation and points earning period runs from February 6 to March 19 – so head to your favorite Foodland or Sack N Save store soon and simply shop and designate.

Thank goodness our store founder, Maurice J. “Sully” Sullivan, had a dream more than 65 years ago. Now you can help a senior fulfill his or her dream!
